Chapter 299: Is Xiao Fu Bao Disliked? The Whole City Loves Me With Their Lives
Chapter 299: Paternal Grandmother
As the Qi Wangfei was preparing to leave, Madam Lu naturally accompanied her to the door. However, before she left, the Qi Wangfei intended to visit her maternal grandmother.
Today, her grandmother had only made a brief appearance with the Grand princess before retreating to the back courtyard.
It was only later that the Qi Wangfei learned from Lu Xinglan that her maternal grandmother had been coughing a lot lately and wasn’t in the best of health, so she had returned early today. Feeling a bit uneasy, the Qi Wangfei decided to visit her before leaving.
Upon hearing this, Madam Lu quickly smiled and responded, “Then let’s go greet my mother first. I’ve prepared some gifts for Suisui, so we can take them along.”
Madam Lu led the way, with the Qi Wangfei, Lu Xinglan, and Sun Shi from the Grand princess’s residence following as they walked toward the back courtyard.
Yan Shi, who was prone to saying things that could offend others, was a bit of a troublemaker. So when the Grand princess returned to the estate, she had asked Sun Shi to accompany her.
Sun Shi was concerned about the situation, so she decided to stay behind to help. She thought she’d leave after the Qi Wangfei had returned to the palace.
As the Qi Wangfei walked with Suisui in her arms, she spoke softly, “When we go inside, we’ll meet your maternal grandmother. Don’t be nervous, Suisui. She’s a very kind woman. We just need to be polite and greet her properly.”
Madam Lu, though busy today and starting to show signs of fatigue, smiled warmly after hearing the Qi Wangfei’s words. She turned to Suisui and gently asked, “We’re family, Suisui. Why would you be afraid?”
After asking, Madam Lu gently stroked Suisui’s soft little face and asked with a smile, “Is that right, Suisui?”
Suisui, feeling the light touch, rubbed her face against her mother’s hand twice and obediently nodded, “Yes, Suisui is the best, Aunt.”
Madam Lu smiled even more sincerely after hearing her reply. She thought, What a lovely child.
The group soon reached Old Madam Lu’s courtyard, where a servant quickly announced their arrival. Old Madam Lu had prepared for their visit, and upon hearing the news, she came out to greet them with a smile.
Lately, she had been coughing a lot, likely due to the cold, and had not been feeling very well.
As the group drew closer, a strong medicinal smell hit them. Suisui scrunched her nose at the scent and quickly buried her face in her mother’s arms.
Ugh, it’s bitter!
Suisui didn’t like the smell of medicine and immediately shrank back into the Qi Wangfei’s embrace.
Old Madam Lu had known about Suisui for some time and had even sent gifts previously. But today, since she wasn’t feeling well and had been busy attending to the Grand princess, she hadn’t had much time to see Suisui.
Now that there were no outsiders, Old Madam Lu relaxed a little and smiled as she reached out to gently touch Suisui’s face. “So this is Mingxi, is it?”
Qi Wangfei, holding Suisui close, smiled and replied, “Yes, her nickname is Suisui. It means ‘safe and sound.’”
Old Madam Lu nodded after hearing the explanation. “Suisui, what a lovely name.”
Suisui, who had learned proper manners from her mother, knew she needed to greet her grandmother respectfully. Although her movements were a bit restricted in her mother’s arms, she still raised her hand and made a polite bow. “Suisui greets you, maternal grandmother. I wish you longevity and good health.”
She had just learned these words from Lele, and now she was using them right away.
Qi Wangfei, hearing Suisui’s polite greeting, was pleasantly surprised. This is why children should study!
Look at how quickly she had picked up new words from Master Shen. Even if she didn’t fully understand them, just by learning more, she had already begun to use the words she had learned in different ways.
She’s my clever Suisui, after all. So quick to learn, and now she understands so much.
Qi Wangfei couldn’t help but feel proud.
Old Madam Lu, too, was impressed by Suisui’s performance. She had expected the child to be shy or reserved, but now she could see that the Qi Wangfei had raised her very well.
Madam Lu nodded approvingly, smiling as she gently touched Suisui’s face again. “Such a good child.”
As they spoke, Madam Lu gestured for a servant to bring out the gift she had prepared. It was a beautiful gold longevity lock, decorated with many bright gemstones—red, green, blue, and even some jade.
The gold lock was solid, heavy in the hand, and very striking. Madam Lu took it and showed it to Suisui before smiling and asking, “Would you like your maternal grandmother to put this on you?”
Suisui had no objections.
However, Suisui needed to ask her mother first.
Upon hearing her maternal grandmother’s words, Suisui turned her head and looked at the Qi Wangfei.
The way she turned her head so obediently was so endearing.
Old Madam Lu couldn’t help but reach out and gently touch Suisui’s little face.
After the Qi Wangfei nodded slightly, Suisui turned back around and spoke gracefully, “Thank you, maternal grandmother!”
Old Madam Lu repeatedly praised her, then personally placed the longevity lock on Suisui.
Once she finished, Old Madam Lu smiled and said, “It’s not good to stand here talking. Let’s go inside.”
As she spoke, she moved toward the door, gently supporting Old Madam Lu as they walked inside.
Old Madam Lu had not been eating well recently, so her body felt especially weak. After standing for a while, her legs were trembling.
It was kind of Madam Lu to notice this, and Old Madam Lu didn’t put on any airs. She half leaned on Madam Lu for support and walked into the house.
Lately, Old Madam Lu had been taking medicine, and the scent of it lingered everywhere—whether in her bedroom, the small reception hall, or even the courtyard.
Worried that the smell might be too strong for the child, Old Madam Lu asked a few simple questions, then had gifts prepared. Her face, however, showed signs of weariness.
Qi Wangfei could immediately tell that her maternal grandmother wasn’t feeling well. She inquired further and learned that it was just a cough and that there were no other serious issues, which eased her mind a little.
Seeing that her maternal grandmother was unwell, the Qi Wangfei didn’t want to stay longer and quickly bid farewell with Suisui.
Though Old Madam Lu wanted to send them off personally, the Qi Wangfei gently insisted that she rest, and Madam Lu did not insist further.
Old Madam Lu personally escorted them out of the estate and prepared some small gifts for Suisui to take with her. “Since we were short on time today, I didn’t prepare anything precious. These are just a few little trinkets to keep the child entertained. Once we’ve arranged a small banquet, I’ll make sure to prepare something more proper for you.”
After explaining, she patted Suisui’s cute little ear and asked with a smile, “What do you think, Suisui? Is that okay?”
Suisui obediently nodded and cheerfully replied, “Yes, maternal grandmother is the best!”
The child’s straightforward words, though simple, were heartwarming.
Old Madam Lu’s smile grew even more sincere.
Afterward, the Qi Wangfei reunited with the Prince Qi in the front yard. When she saw that the children were ready, the family began to board the carriage.
Lu Xinglan and Sun Shi also bid their farewells in turn and started on their way back.
Madam Lu smiled and sent everyone off.
Once the last of the guests had departed, Madam Lu’s expression darkened. As she walked toward the back courtyard, she asked her maid, “How is the person in the Buddhist hall doing?”
