 Chapter 298: The Cousins Fight

At this moment, Madam Xu and Madam Xie were both standing there, looking somewhat awkward.

To be more precise, it was Madam Xie who seemed a bit out of place.

Madam Xu stood with her hands on her hips, a proud look on her face, appearing somewhat arrogant.

Seeing this, Lu Xinglan immediately grew cold.

In someone else's house, causing such a commotion, and Madam Xu still had the nerve to act so proud?

Lu Xinglan took a few steps forward and ordered two burly women, "Quickly pull them apart. Is this really something to be proud of?"

The women obediently moved forward, separating the two girls as if they were handling little chicks.

Miss Xu, Xu Yueling, clearly wasn't satisfied and was still wildly flailing her arms. "Let go of me! Let go of me! She's my older sister, why shouldn't I be allowed to fight back? Why not!"

At that moment, Xie Yujiao, who had just been pinned down and beaten, looked ashen with rage. She raised her hand to point at Xu Yueling, her teeth chattering, but couldn't speak for a long time.

Madam Xie, witnessing this, pursed her lips slightly, quickly walking over to comfort her daughter. But Xie Yujiao shoved her away, shouting, "Go away, it's all your fault!"

After shouting, Xie Yujiao forcefully broke free from the maidservant's hold and ran off.

Madam Xie, worried about her daughter, was about to chase after her when Madam Xu grabbed her arm. "You can't just leave. After letting your daughter bully ours, you think you can walk away? If you don't give me an explanation, I'll make sure to stir up trouble at your house!"

Madam Xie was left standing in a difficult position, neither able to leave nor stay. After a moment of hesitation, she turned to Lu Xinglan.

Lu Xinglan thought to herself:

So, you’ve been weak and easily bullied all along, but now you expect someone else to step in?

In the past, Lu Xinglan had helped Madam Xie. However, after doing so, Madam Xie never appreciated it and even complained that Lu Xinglan meddled too much, which strained their relationship.

After a while, who would still want to be involved in her family's mess?

Thus, when Madam Xie turned to her for help, Lu Xinglan ignored her gaze and instead said to Madam Xu, "Both of you ladies need to manage your own children."

She didn't wish to say more.

With the situation now under control, she was ready to leave.

However, Madam Xu wasn’t pleased with that response. "What do you mean by 'manage our children'? My child is the one being bullied. Someone needs to handle it, right?"

In recent years, Madam Xu had become more and more unreasonable.

Lu Xinglan wasn’t surprised by her words.

She wasn’t someone who would tolerate nonsense. Before she married, she was the eldest daughter of the Fuguo Marquis's household, and after marriage, she became the wife of the Marquis of Chengguo. When it came to the Marquis Jinyang’s household, Lu Xinglan felt she had nothing to fear.

She had already turned to leave but paused, sneering, "If Madam Xu cannot handle her own matters, I don't mind personally visiting the old madam to ask if it's time for the Xu family to consider replacing her as the head of the household."

Upon hearing this, Madam Xu’s face darkened. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but Lu Xinglan had already flicked her sleeve and walked away without another glance.

Madam Xie hesitated, on the verge of speaking, but in the end, she said nothing.

Suisui, nestled in her mother’s arms, stretched her neck to look, but couldn’t see much. All she saw were two distressed beautiful sisters, one flailing her limbs, the other covering her face as she ran away.

Suisui didn’t understand, and Qi Wangfei didn’t offer any explanations.

When facing the Marquis Jinyang’s family, she always felt a bit uneasy.

Thus, she soon took Suisui and left.

On their way back, they encountered Zhou Shi, and Qi Wangfei quietly asked, "Why has the trouble started again?"

The relationship between the Xu and Xie families was never peaceful, and the siblings from both households had a strained and tense relationship. This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened, with the two young ladies causing a scene.

Qi Wangfei thought to herself that if only Madam Xie could stand up for herself, it wouldn’t have come to this. The Empress Dowager had already lost her temper countless times over this matter and regretted not intervening when Lord Xie remarried, which had eventually led to this messy outcome.

But now, the situation was set, and it was of little use to regret. Lord Xie and Madam Xie had been married for many years and had children; it wasn’t as simple as just divorcing her.

When Qi Wangfei asked about the situation, Zhou Shi gently shook her head. "I haven't asked yet what it's about, but when young ladies fight, it's usually over things like jewelry or clothes."

After speaking vaguely, Zhou Shi glanced around, noticing that everyone was quietly discussing matters with those they were close to. She lowered her voice even further and said, "I heard that a few days ago, Xu's household held a family banquet and brought all the concubine's daughters back. Perhaps Miss Xu's mood has been affected by this."

Anyone would feel unsettled by suddenly having so many half-sisters, and it wasn’t likely that Miss Xu would be in a good mood.

Moreover, Xu Yueling's temperament...

Zhou Shi shook her head as she thought about it.

Originally, she thought Madam Xu's temperament was already outrageous, but it seemed that her daughter was even worse—like a green plant surpassing its older counterpart.

When Qi Wangfei heard that the Xu family had brought all their concubine daughters back, her brows slightly furrowed, and the light in her eyes flickered.

Zhou Shi knew that Qi Wangfei likely didn’t want to hear more of this and quickly shifted the topic.

Suisui, not understanding what her mother and Aunt Zhou were discussing, simply rested quietly in her mother's arms.

Soon, the others returned, and everyone quietly discussed the matter among themselves, but no one dared to mention names directly. They were all worried that Madam Xu might lose her temper and cause a scene.

After all, she was no stranger to outbursts, and once she lost control, there was no telling how far things would go.

These noble ladies weren’t keen to provoke a madwoman for no reason, so they controlled their words, speaking indirectly or pushing the conversation elsewhere.

The gossip could happen elsewhere, so there was no need to stir things up at that moment.

Qi Wangfei didn’t say much more. She simply asked Suisui if she wanted something to eat.

When Madam Lu returned, Lu Xinglan shared what had happened with her.

Madam Lu frowned slightly after hearing the story.

However, the conflicts between the two families were not something she needed to get involved in.

Although she felt a bit dissatisfied, it didn’t dampen her mood too much.

Besides, if she complained to her mother-in-law or father-in-law, neither the Xu nor the Xie family would come out ahead.

The Xie family would have to consider the Empress Dowager, while the Xu family had fewer restrictions. Though they couldn’t do whatever they pleased, they certainly had the means to vent their frustrations.

In the afternoon, after enjoying the performance, the noble ladies began to feel fatigued and gradually stood up to bid their farewells.

Because of the family ties between the two houses, Qi Wangfei didn’t rush to leave. She handed Suisui over to her Aunt Xiang and stayed behind to see off the departing ladies with Madam Lu and Lu Xinglan.

After everything was settled, it was already nearing evening.

Luckily, the days were getting longer, so even though it was getting late, the sky hadn’t darkened yet.

After seeing the ladies off, Madam Lu sighed in relief. She then took Lu Xinglan and Qi Wangfei’s hands and expressed her gratitude.

Qi Wangfei gently shook her head, saying that there was no need for thanks since they were family. She then added, "The child is tired, and we should be leaving as well."

It was nearly the second evening hour, 7:00 PM.
