  Chapter 284: High Fever Unrelenting

Suisui's mood was so cheerful that she felt like she could bubble over. She obediently tilted her head toward Sister Lianrong, her voice soft with a touch of hesitation, "Sister, can you touch my tassel again?"

This older sister seemed strict and could scold people, but Suisui thought she was very kind.

Lu Lianrong was momentarily stunned by Suisui's proactive request. After a moment, she smiled without meaning to.

However, there was still much to do, so she quickly patted Suisui on the head. Then, worried that Suisui might feel neglected and hurt, Lu Lianrong softly asked, "Do you want me to hold you?"

Although Lu Lianrong was tall for her age, she was still just a child herself. Suisui was afraid of tiring her out, so after a brief thought, she emphasized, "I'm heavy."

Lu Lianrong: ...

She couldn't tell at all.

Suisui was like a tiny kitten, barely weighing anything.

But since Suisui had mentioned it, Lu Lianrong guessed she probably wanted to be held. She nodded and then asked Qi Wangfei, "Aunt, can I carry her?"

Lu Lianrong was calm and composed, and Qi Wangfei trusted her. Since Suisui didn't seem unwilling, she handed her over to Lu Lianrong. She also instructed Lu Lianrong's maid, "Dun Dun, go quietly and tell the mistress what is happening here. The child is very ill. The Marquis family can't ignore it. Whether the child gets better or worse, we don’t want any blame falling on us."

Lu Lianrong had planned to give the same instruction. Despite her young age, she was very perceptive.

Qi Wangfei thought that the adults were still around, and it wasn't right for a child to handle everything. So she handed Suisui to Lu Lianrong and told her own ladies-in-waiting to play with her while she and Lu Xinglan handled the arrangements.

Everyone moved quickly and soon reached Lu Xinglan's courtyard. Once the child was settled, the doctor checked his pulse, prescribed medicine, and administered acupuncture to help lower the fever and prevent further convulsions. If the seizures continued, there was a real fear the child might not survive.

Madam Lu acted quickly and managed to calm everyone down. She then personally brought the eldest daughter of the Wei family, Wei Yongmei, over.

Upon hearing her brother’s condition, Wei Yongmei was frantic, and when she saw her brother's face flushed from the fever, she immediately began to cry.

The capital had long praised the young wife of Marquis Huaiyang, claiming her to be virtuous and kind. Her duties and social events were always arranged around her eldest daughter, with even her own children placed second. But those on the inside knew better.

Without her mother present, and with her grandmother absent, and her father being uninterested in affairs, Wei Yongmei's ability to protect her younger brother was very limited.

Seeing her brother in such a condition, her heart broke.

Qi Wangfei, watching from the side, couldn’t help but feel sympathy: "Don't cry, don't cry. He should be fine. The Physician is taking care of him, and Physician Wu, who is good with high fevers, will be here shortly. Everything will be fine."

As she spoke, Dun Dun had already brought Physician Wu over.

Physician Wu, looking pale, entered with a disapproving expression. After adjusting his clothing and headpiece, he was ready to scold, but when he saw the child’s severe fever, his face darkened further. He glanced at Lu Lianrong and then at Dun Dun with discontent.

Dun Dun, oblivious, responded, “Why are you glaring at me? Treat the child first!”

Physician Wu: ?

You really think I owe you something!

Physician Wu grumbled as he walked over, seeing that the child’s fever was so high that he was nearly delirious. He couldn’t help but shout in frustration: “Who would let a child get this sick?”

Despite his anger, he still managed to curse with restraint, only using mild expletives.

Suisui, meanwhile, was distracted by Lu Lianrong and didn’t understand any of the exchanges.

Afraid that holding her might tire Lu Lianrong, Suisui squirmed to be let down.

Lu Lianrong, seeing that Suisui wanted to get down, didn’t resist and carefully set her on the ground.

Still worried about the sick child, Suisui tugged at Lu Lianrong’s sleeve and quietly asked, “Sister, is the little brother going to be okay?”

Lu Lianrong wasn’t certain, but since Physician Wu seemed to think the situation could be controlled, she reassured Suisui, "Don't worry, everything will be fine."

Madam Lu, looking on anxiously, couldn’t help but worry as well.

Meanwhile, Qi Wangfei comforted her, "The banquet still needs your attention, it wouldn’t look right for you to stay here too long. I’ll take care of things here. You go back."

Though she was anxious, Madam Lu knew the banquet couldn't be left unattended. She had to keep face, even though her concern for the child made it hard to leave.

Sighing, Madam Lu muttered, "What a disaster."

She wanted to scold the young wife of Marquis Huaiyang but couldn’t, so she only sighed in frustration.

Lu Xinglan, who was standing nearby, could see the internal struggle but didn’t comment.

Soon after, the servants took their leave, and Qi Wangfei turned to look at the silently weeping Wei Yongmei. The two women exchanged a silent glance and sighed in unison, both deeply troubled by the situation.
