  Chapter 277: Madam Lu

Hearing this, Madam Lu paused mid-motion.

Suisui obediently extended her hands with a sweet smile. “Aunt, hold me.”

Her soft, childish voice warmed Madam Lu’s heart.

Unable to control herself, Madam Lu enthusiastically took the child into her arms.

Before Suisui realized it, she had been transferred from Aunt Xiang’s embrace to Madam Lu’s.

Held by Madam Lu, Suisui sniffed at the pleasant fragrance emanating from her.

The child’s cute little nose twitch melted Madam Lu’s heart, making it impossible for her to stop smiling.

What a darling child.

No wonder everyone in the Prince Residence adored her, even the Emperor and Empress Dowager.

With her obedient demeanor, soft voice, and adorable mannerisms, who wouldn’t love her?

Madam Lu held Suisui a bit tighter, feeling the fragile frame beneath her fingers. Frowning slightly, she whispered to Qi Wangfei, “She needs better nourishment—this frame is far too weak.”

A frail body was challenging to strengthen.

Especially for one so young, it was worrisome.

Qi Wangfei nodded with a smile, already well aware of this.

After some more conversation, Madam Lu handed Suisui back to Aunt Xiang and led Qi Wangfei further inside.

By this time, many distinguished ladies had already arrived.

The Song family was also present. Qi Wangfei first exchanged words with several familiar noblewomen, then chatted briefly with her younger sister-in-law, Zhou Shi.

Noticing that her elder sister-in-law was absent, Qi Wangfei assumed she wasn’t feeling well.

Nonetheless, she asked softly, “How is Sister-in-law’s health lately?”

Zhou Shi sighed helplessly. “The same as always. It’s just that the recent rains made the air damp, aggravating her cough. It’s so bad she’s lost her voice these past few days.”

Hearing this, Qi Wangfei frowned slightly and sighed silently. “Should I request the Empress Dowager for a palace physician to visit her?”

Zhou Shi had initially intended to decline, considering they had already consulted many physicians to no avail—her condition simply required rest.

But out of politeness, she nodded, “That would be kind of you.”

Qi Wangfei waved dismissively. “It’s nothing—we’re family, after all.”

As they spoke, Qi Wangfei noticed someone entering.

Seeing who it was, she tightly gripped her handkerchief, her heart sinking. Turning to Zhou Shi, she asked quietly, “Why is she here?”

The newcomer was Cui Shi, wife of the Marquis Jinyang.

The Qi family’s relationship with the Marquis Jinyang’s household was lukewarm at best, with little interaction.

Yet, with coming-of-age ceremony being such a grand affair, Cui Shi’s attendance seemed reasonable.

Qi Wangfei recalled having spotted the Marquis’s carriage earlier on the road.

Still, she had hoped to avoid encountering them so soon, and now that they were here, unease crept into her heart.

Zhou Shi had intended to continue sharing family updates to ease Qi Wangfei’s concerns.

But before she could, Qi Wangfei’s question drew her attention. Zhou Shi looked up to see Cui Shi chatting with Lady Xiao, blinking quickly before gently nudging Qi Wangfei. “They came together.”

Only then did Qi Wangfei notice Lady Xiao accompanying Cui Shi.

Frankly speaking...

Qi Wangfei wasn’t fond of either of them.

Seeing them together only made her headache worse.

A complicated family dynamic indeed.
