Chapter 439: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 439: Divine Protection Ends the Relationship (2)
Respect?
Mo Yan furrowed her brow, quickly understanding their hesitation, and couldn't help but smile. If it weren't for her past life experiences and her certainty that she didn't possess any special abilities, she might have thought Mo Yongxi's sudden violent outburst, followed by coughing up blood, was divine retribution for attacking her. Believing herself to be under divine protection, such reactions from the villagers were not surprising.
"Uncles and elders, you all just witnessed what my little aunt did. I'm not sure if she offended some passing deity, which caused her to cough up blood and faint. When the village chief and Second Grandfather arrive, I hope you can help testify so that no one mistakenly blames my family for injuring her. I thank you all in advance for your assistance," Mo Yan said politely, feigning a trace of sadness on her face.
In the eyes of the villagers, her words and demeanor made them sympathize with her, thinking she was hurt by Mo Yongxi's malicious actions and fearing being wrongly accused. Some of the villagers, out of genuine integrity or a desire to be on good terms with the Mo family, spoke up first.
"Yan girl, you are a good child. Even after Mo Yongxi tried to ruin your appearance, you still address her as 'little aunt'. Don't worry, her suffering is the result of divine punishment for her evil deeds, and it has nothing to do with your family. I'll testify for you," an elderly man said earnestly.
"That's right, Yan girl, don't worry. We all saw what happened. We won't let Old Mo's family blame you for this," another villager chimed in.
"Indeed, I'm willing to testify for your family. You can rest assured!"
...
With someone taking the lead, whether out of righteousness or an intention to befriend the Mo family, most of the villagers spontaneously agreed to testify, much to Mo Yan's gratitude.
"Thank you, uncles and elders. After the village chief and Second Grandfather resolve this matter, please come to my house for a cup of hot tea to warm yourselves."
"Haha, that's great! I've heard your family's tea is delicious. I've been wanting to try it!" The villagers happily accepted. Since it was the first day of the lunar new year, visiting the Mo family to pay respects and enjoy good tea wouldn't raise any suspicions of taking advantage.
As they chatted, someone keen-eyed spotted Yang Bao hurriedly approaching. Not far behind him were Old Mo, Hong shi, and their group.
Before they even got close, Hong shi saw Mo Yongxi lying lifelessly on the ground and began wailing in despair, "My poor daughter! You came out to celebrate New Year's Day, but these damn people have harmed you like this!"
Upon hearing Mo Yan's request for witnesses, the villagers exchanged glances and shook their heads simultaneously. Hong shi, despite her age, seemed unable to see things clearly. She was quick to blame the Mo family without understanding anything, which explained why the Mo family didn't treat them well—they were too eager to take advantage, and this was their just deserts!
Fortunately, the villagers had witnessed Mo Yongxi attacking without provocation and getting injured inexplicably, or the innocent Mo family might have been wrongly accused.
Old Mo, worried about his daughter's safety, initially didn't pay attention to Hong shi's words. In his heart, he actually hoped his daughter's misfortune could be blamed on Mo Yan's family, allowing him to use it as leverage to regain control over the Mo family and perhaps take possession of everything they owned.
Wu shi, however, was genuinely concerned. Ignoring Mo Yongxi lying on the ground, she approached Mo Yan while comforting her two children. "Yan girl, what's going on? It has nothing to do with you, right?"
