 Chapter 217: Suisui is Worthy

With the imperial decree issued, within half a day, word spread throughout the capital: the Qiwang Manor had a new little princess. Plans to announce Suisui's identity with a banquet had to start immediately.

After seeing the imperial messengers out, The Prince of Qi eagerly held Suisui in his arms. Even though she was bundled up like a little roll, he didn’t mind at all; instead, he found it highly amusing. He felt she was too slender and thought that gaining some weight would make her more sturdy, something that could help him feel more at ease.

He laughed heartily, saying, “My Suisui, if only you grew a little heavier, then your father could really be at peace.”

Wrapped up in the blanket, Suisui could barely move. Embarrassed by her father’s playful remarks, she giggled softly.

Not wanting her to feel uncomfortable or exposed to the wind, The Prince quickly handed Suisui to Aunt Xiang. “Take her to rest,” he instructed, “she’s still recovering, so no fussing around.”

Aunt Xiang quickly acknowledged this, while Feng Xuanrui and the other siblings tried to follow, only to be stopped by The Prince’s sharp look. “Off to rest! This afternoon, you all go to class with the tutor, no excuses!”

The children pouted but didn’t dare disobey. After some cajoling from Feng Xuancang, they reluctantly left, each managing to get a quick, affectionate pat or kiss on Suisui’s head before departing.

Once they had gathered in the main hall, The Prince brought up the banquet, saying, “We should select an auspicious date for this. Suisui now has a name, a title, and though people in the capital will eventually hear about it, an official banquet will give her a dignified and proper introduction. We should make it a celebration.”

As he considered Suisui’s health and the importance of a full recovery, The Prince added, “Let’s avoid this month. We can look for a good date next month when the weather’s warmer. It’ll be nice then, with the flowers, greenery, and ponds all fresh. We can even hold some events by the lake.”

The Prince grew increasingly enthusiastic as he spoke, wanting to shower all the best things upon his beloved daughter immediately.

Qi Wangfei agreed that waiting would allow Suisui time to regain her strength and hair growth, making everything more fitting. She then mentioned in passing that early May would be busy due to Marquis Fu’s family banquet. “On the second day of May, Marquis Fu’s son Chen-ge will have his coming-of-age ceremony, and it’s going to be quite grand.”

The Prince nodded, slightly taken aback; he had nearly forgotten many important events after his close encounter with death at the manor. His anger flared again as he thought of the Che family. Despite everything he had done to help them, they’d been ungrateful and self-serving. His resentment festered, and he muttered in irritation about how they had bitten the hand that fed them.

Moving past the bitter thoughts, he refocused on the banquet. “We’ll set it for mid- or late-May and choose the best auspicious date possible. If nothing fits, then we’ll go with June, or even July. Only the best date will do for our Manor’s princess!”

Qi Wangfei smiled, agreeing to seek out a favorable date.

The Prince wanted additional assurance, deciding, “I’ll consult the Emperor and have him ask the Astronomical Bureau for the most favorable date.”

The others exchanged amused looks—such privilege had its perks, after all.

Alongside banquet preparations, Qi Wangfei also considered the women in the rear court, many of whom had served for years without any substantial roles. “Some of the elder attendants are fine,” she said thoughtfully, “but some others have little to contribute. Keeping them here only invites daily squabbles.”

Hearing this, The Prince was quick to reply. “Ask who would be willing to take a settlement and leave. Report their requests to me.”

Concubine Ren raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Is The Prince turning over a new leaf?”

The Prince fell silent, avoiding discussing his infertility or the implications it held. Masking his unease with a scowl, he grumbled, “Just listen to Qi Wangfei, and stop talking so much.”

Still, Concubine Ren couldn’t resist pressing with a laugh, “Well, I was just curious!”

Their banter was interrupted by the arrival of Aunt Qiu, who came to announce that new clothes from the Embroidery Workshop had arrived. Qi Wangfei's eyes sparkled with delight, “Quick, quick, bring them in! If Suisui is awake, we’ll try them on right away; if not, we’ll wait until she’s rested.”

Hearing this, The Prince’s mood brightened, forgetting any irritation with Concubine Ren. The Embroidery Workshop seamstresses were soon led in to ensure the clothes were perfectly fitted to Suisui, who, for the first time, would try on clothes tailored exclusively for her.
