Chapter 205: Stealing the Credit - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter
Chapter 205: Stealing the Credit
Feigning innocence, Feng Jinyao smiled lightly at Shen Shi and said, “I was ill the past few days. Today I came to see Grandfather and the others. Seeing that they are well, I feel relieved. If Third Aunt has no other matters, then I must leave, as I have things to attend to at home.”
“Don’t rush to leave. Please sit in my courtyard for a while. I do have something I would like to ask Miss San for help with.”
Feng Jinyao had never seen Shen Shi so humble, which piqued her curiosity about what Shen Shi wanted to discuss. So she patiently replied, “I don’t need t o go to your courtyard. If Third Aunt needs my help with something, please just ask.”
Shen Shi glanced around. There weren’t many people present, but Yunxu, who was with Feng Jinyao, was watching nearby. Shen Shi felt a bit uneasy about speaking openly.
Feng Jinyao understood her hesitation and said to Yunxu, “I left a handkerchief with my cousin. Could you go retrieve it for me?”
“Yes, Miss.”
Yunxu, understanding that a private conversation was about to take place, stepped away to wait at a distance.
“Third Aunt, please go ahead.”
Seeing that Yunxu had left, Shen Shi signaled to Zheng Mama, and once everyone was gone, she hesitantly continued.
“Ah, I hardly know how to begin. Miss San has always been prominent in Dongdu and has no trouble with suitors. However, my daughter Sihan has endured hardships with us, staying in Qiongzhou, and has not been able to find a suitable husband. Now our family is in chaos, everyone is focusing on the eldest daughter, and we seem to have been forgotten.”
As she spoke, she wiped away tears, looking as though she had suffered greatly.
Noticing that Feng Jinyao did not respond, Shen Shi felt awkward but pushed on, “I see that Miss San is kind-hearted and has often supported my daughter. Could you please help us find a suitable family for Sihan in Dongdu? We are not asking for high officials or rich families, just a husband who is considerate and has kind parents.”
Feng Jinyao looked at her, finding Shen Shi somewhat amusing for the first time. Not to mention that Sihan was still unmarried, even if she were married, Shen Shi and Bai Sihan had probably sought the wrong person.
However, a good opportunity was presented, and she was indeed worried about who would help with it.
So she looked at Shen Shi with a particularly warm and sincere expression.
“Third Aunt, you are too formal. Sihan is my direct cousin and her talents and beauty are among the best in Dongdu. How could she be treated poorly?”
Shen Shi felt relieved upon hearing this. This Miss San was indeed someone who knew how to recognize and treat people well, much better than those clueless individuals in the courtyard. Her smile grew even more sincere.
“Indeed, with such talent and beauty, it’s a pity she was born into our third branch. If she were in the main or fourth branch, suitors would probably be knocking down our doors.”
Her tone was full of envy, but it was clear that she was complaining about how the main and fourth branches had left them no room.
If Feng Jinyao hadn’t understood Shen Shi and Bai Sihan’s actions previously, she might have been tempted to help out seeing Shen Shi’s motherly concern for her daughter.
After thinking for a moment, Feng Jinyao pretended to ponder and then said to Shen Shi.
“Third Aunt, are you familiar with the Yunqi Academy?”
“Of course, I know it.”
“My second brother is currently studying there and is preparing for the imperial examination this spring. I recently asked for some safety charms to ensure his success, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to deliver them due to poor health…”
At this point, if Shen Shi didn’t understand, she would probably miss out on a “good match.”
“Miss San, don’t worry. If Sihan delivers them, it’s the same. After all, she is the younger sister of the Second Master. It doesn’t matter who goes!”
“In that case, thank you, Third Aunt, and cousin, for running this errand. I’ve heard that many young men are preparing for the examination there. If Sihan can meet a suitable match, it would indeed be a good opportunity.”
Shen Shi beamed with joy and praised Feng Jinyao as if she were her own daughter.
Feng Jinyao, needing to return to make arrangements, declined Shen Shi’s invitation to stay and said, “I’ll be waiting in the mansion for my cousin to pick up the safety charms tomorrow.”
“Rest assured, Miss San. Sihan will definitely come!”
Having achieved her goal, Feng Jinyao did not linger. Yunxu had returned by then. After greeting Shen Shi, they left the Bai residence.
In the carriage, Yunxu noticed her young miss expression of satisfaction and asked, “Miss, what did the Third Madam say that makes you so happy?”
“Yunxu, if you had the chance to push your enemies into an abyss, would you be happy?”
Enemies?
Although the Third Madam and her daughter had acted inappropriately, they didn’t seem to be enemies of Miss, did they? Yunxu was about to ask more but saw Feng Jinyao closing her eyes to rest and realized she didn’t want to talk. So Yunxu stopped pressing.
In Bai Sihan’s courtyard, Shen Shi was animatedly discussing tomorrow’s arrangements, but Bai Sihan was disinterested and finally said, “Mother, I’m not going.”
Shen Shi was almost outraged.
“Child, this is such a good opportunity to meet talented young men. How can you say you won’t go?”
“Hmph, what’s the use of meeting them? My reputation in Dongdu is probably worse than that of Elder Sister. She has the title of Anping Princess, while I? Just the daughter of the third branch who offended Princess Changlin. Who would dare to see me again?”
Although Bai Sihan’s injuries had healed significantly, her character had become somewhat subdued. Perhaps Princess Changlin’s reprimand had made her realize her own insignificance, so she no longer held illusions, unlike Shen Shi.
Seeing her daughter’s disinterest, Shen Shi was anxious.
“Sihan, what happened to your previous spirit? Why not compete with those next door? Even though Bai Siruo eloped with a man, the Bai family managed to find excuses to silence outsiders and even persuaded the Emperor to grant a title. The Prince Kang’s mansion seems blind to it; they didn’t even cancel the engagement.”
Shen Shi, who believed that Bai Siruo’s situation was just a cover-up by the Bai family, still thought it was all made up with the truth determined by the Bai family.
“Look at you. It’s been over half a month since you were punished. Who cares? If you continue to self-destruct, how will you stand before Bai Siruo in the future? Listen to your mother, go on this errand for Miss San. You might just meet a suitable young man!”
When Shen Shi mentioned a young man, Bai Sihan suddenly thought of Wen Mengsheng.
Since being beaten, she had stayed at home and was unaware of outside news. She had only heard that Princess Changlin had taken a liking to someone from the Wen family. Wen Mengsheng, her cousin, had been forced to become a prince consort and had entered the princess’s residence, but there had been no news.
